Over 40 High FSH Success Stories

On the Women Over 40 With High FSH message board, there is a post called the Over 40 Timeline. It is a post that contains the successes of the women from that board. Whenever someone has a baby, they come back to add themselves to that post. Many times though, the ladies are so busy after the birth that they don't have time to come back and post (which is completely understandable), so this isn't a comprehensive list. But still, the number of success cases is amazing. It is a truly inspiring list. I refer to it often when my spirits are in need of a lift, like now!

Some interesting points:
  • The oldest person on the list is Annie from Finland, with a baby at age 47, and highest FSH 37.
  • Highest FSH on the list is Toni, who clocked in at 110.

Remember, this is just the ladies who used to post on this one message board. Such a small subset of everyone out there who was ever diagnosed with high FSH and are in their 40s!

Here is the list copied from the message board. It is current as of April 2009.

Can I add my experience. I did 5 high stim IVF cycles at 41 (fsh was 13.2) This included 2 cancelled cycles. Had one chemical and never any leftover embies. Went down donor egg route at 42 ( DS born ). At 43, 4 months after DS born fell naturally pg without trying!

It's always encouraging to hear that there are so many others out there who are trying jsut as hard as I do. I am 44.6 years' old, still hoping for mircles to happen. I have failed one ivf and several iui's...

I got pregnant at 42 through ivf with my highest fsh at 32.3. I had only one egg that fertilized, and they transferred it, and I got pregnant. My son is now almost nine months old. My secret? DHEA, Acupuncture and Wheatgrass juice.

I have been lurking here for a while and I am so glad to be able to post. On 6/21/09, I had an FSH of 24 after being between 4 and 7 for two years. A month later, I CD3 FSH was 12.6. We were told that donor eggs would be the only way to conceive. On 8/28/09, after not even trying to conceive, we got a BFP and on 9/12/09, we saw our baby's heartbeat! It can happen; miracles do happen. Karen (40 years old)

43 yrs old now started trying at 41. 4 failed Ivf, 1st Ivf resulted in ectopic. No frozen embies. 10 failed iui. I grow avg 7 follies/eggs. Final iui next week and we move to donor. Fsh 7 to 10. Doc says must be poor egg quality. I have to give up to move on. It's so hard. Especially reading these stories. Thanks for sharing.

Happy New Year. I'm 41.5, first marriage at 40. Found out FSH 16.2 on day3. I was disappointed upon hearing the news, but didn't cry until about the 4th time the nurse told me she was so sorry about the results. Thanks for the hope.

What is a DS baby?

Anonymous said...

Yes, some of us are older, have low fsh but high e2 and would be interested in those stories, thank you!

Mini ivf versus guns-a-blazing? Seems like some drs advocate getting as many follicles as possible in the hope that one will be decent, while others say go gently with mini ivf, you need good quality, not quantity, don't overstimulate. What have you heard/experienced? Thanks!

YOUR FOLLICLES MIGHT DISAPPEAR)this also caused a cyst. IVF#3 FSH 15 2 follicles one egg retrieved, egg degenerated before fertilization) so you can see I've been down. But this post has given me hope! And hope is all I need! I do acupuncture, good diet, DHEA, CoQ10, royal jelly, red raspberry tea, B6, melatonin, visualization exercises, the works. If I get to my goal, I will definitely repost here. THANKS AGAIN!

Ladies - I read these posts for 4 years to remain hopeful and inspired and now I get to inspire others! I'm 44 and been ttc for 4 years. After 45 BFN's, we finally had a positive and I'm 6 weeks along!

1. IVF clinic #1 ID
7 IUI's
1 canceled IVF (btw canceled by Dr. Bc 1 follie - not aware we could have insisted that we continue IVF cycle)
1 failed IVF
FSH - below 10
Didn't stim well
Told POR and should go straight to donor egg bc my eggs 'must' be bad - in fact, Dr. audaciously picked out egg donor for us
Diagnosis: unexplained infertility (rather, disinterested infertility) and not advised of testing options, told 1% chance to conceive

IVF Clinic #2 CCRM
Performed AM test and follie count
FSH 10-15
Dr. said at my age of 42, could try a different stim protocol, but probably a 5% chance to conceive.
Knew from first clinic my body didn't like stim meds or most meds in general and started listening to my own instinct. Knew this clinic was not a good fit.

IVF Clinic #3 NHFC NY
Clinic offers natural and clomid stim cycles. I choose natural knowing my body doesn't like many meds.
7 out of 9 natural egg retievals result in 5-day blastocysts frozen for later transfers! WOOHOO! Go follies go! The first two clinics be damned about my "bad eggs"!
Dr. gave us 20-30% chance of conceiving.
During this process, my fsh fluctuated each month as did my collie count. My high fsh was 75 and the month I conceived it was 56!!!!!!!!
BTW, after the third blast transfer, I had researched implantation failure and insisted on testing for autoimmune and clotting disorders and tested positive for antithrombin and MTHFR. For the next blast transfer I was placed on baby aspirin and Lovenox and got pregnant!

What I learned and deduced:

1. Standard ivf clinics know but don't tell you that stim meds can impact the quality of follies since they go for quantity over quality. POR and LOR patients are harder to treat and can bring down the clinic's success rates so they try to chase them away via 1% pregnancy scare tactics or strong-arm them toward egg donors. (There are people who may legitimately need donor eggs.)

2. Consult with a Reproductive Immunologist who can run all autoimmune and clotting tests. It is vital to know if you have any issues that need to be treated BEFORE exploring IVF. You may waste a lot of money on failed IUI or IVF like I did. To think that perhaps all I needed was blood thinners to get pregnant...I spent over $100,000 to get pregnant.

3. If you have high fsh, POR, or are 40 or older, avoid standard IVF clinics and go straight to a clinic that offers natural IVF like New Hope or Dr. Check. They don't turn anyone away. They're not concerned with CDC statistics. They're often less expensive. They have a lot more experience in their labs. New Hope successfully retrieved 7 follies that all cultured to 5-day blasts and each one survived the thaw.

4. For what it's worth, I tried wheatgrass, bee pollen and acupuncture. Also, 3 weeks before this successful transfer, I went gluten-free for the heck of it. I've never tested for gluten sensitivity but decided to have a calm stomach/immune system. Also did acupuncture before and after transfer. New Hope mainly handles POR and over 40 crowd.

A few more things.....follie counts and fsh fluctuate month-to-month so testing only one month is taking a stab in the dark. The fluctuation can sometimes be quite dramatic so don't lose hope! One month's number does not define you or your issue!! And drs. are excessively pessimistic.

New Hope's highest fsh success story, when I asked a year ago, was in the 150's.

Don't believe everything the drs. tell you and don't give up hope!

"Is Your Body Baby Friendly?" Dr. Alan Beer (RI)
Dr. Braverman (RI) NY

A lot of RE's are dismissive of RI's, but IMHO, women struggling to conceive or who have more than one miscarriage should run straight to a Reproductive Immunologist first. Many insurances will cover the costs. Reproductive Endocrinologists should be last.

Yes, they sometimes used birth control or estrogen to bring my fsh down to jumpstart my cycle and it worked several times. It's an imperfect science but they're pretty experienced with it.

New Hope has a 95% thaw success rate - many clinics are 30% - 50%.

I had my first two children aged 40 and 41 after 4 miscarriages. I knew I wanted a third but as soon as my cycle reset after my second I knew it was changing. I was 42 by this time, had a stressful return to work, two toddlers and my father passed away, so I had a fertility check up just to see if there were any issues over and above my age to contend with and whether we should consider i v f. It was no surprise to learn that I had high fsg ( above 20), low amh ( below 1), shrinking ovaries and other likely symptoms of peri-menopause. On top of my age which was rapidly approaching 43, I was starting to have cycle irregularities where cycle length went from 18 days one month to 42 the next. So the doctors said donor eggs were my best chance, but maybe to try a cycle of clomid which he prescribed. Two weeks following the most depressing doctors visit I ever had in my many years of trying, I got a positive pregnancy test. Sadly at 11 weeks, despite a detected heartbeat at 9 weeks I had a missed miscarriage. Whilst most likely explanation is egg quality, I had two previous miscarriages which happened in the same way so who knows. I have no underlying reason for the miscarriages which could be definitively diagnosed. Anyway two months later I was pregnant again but again miscarried although thankfully at 5 weeks so no d and c needed. I am now 43, hoping for a miracle but knowing it's not likely and trying to celebrate the two wonderful children I have been lucky enough to have. Motherhood is a job I feel I was born to do ( even though the two toddlers do sometimes drive me nuts!!) and I do feel sad that I may have to face the fact that two may be the end of a very rocky road for me. At this stage I think I'd rather not get pregnant again than face a seventh miscarriage. It does get easier to cope, but the crushed hope is awful. Good luck to everyone trying whatever your age and remember you won't ever get pregnant if you don't try. For me that means timed inter course has given way to every 2-3 days over they cycle and ovulation tests, b b t and ewcm are much less reliable for me than they once were. Good luck and keep posting the positive stories - every glimmer of hope that is transferred is a wonderful gift.

Sorry, buts its not true that "most" insurances cover the cost of reproductive immunology treatments. If you are over 35 with high FSH, you should consider a donor egg to get pregnant (sorry if that's not what you want to hear). Most of the top IVF clinics in the United States with the highest success rates do NOT prescribe immunology treatments such as IVIG, intralipids, etc. There is a reason for that. Immunology treatments are largely for women who refuse to believe their egg quality is poor.

Dear Jan,
I am a medical doctor having coagulation and immunology issues. Kindly read Alan's Beer book "Is your body baby friendly?", published studies about immune issues and some patients stories on the internet. Many immune patients have done 18, 19 or 24th IVF (including donor eggs) and had unrecognized implantation failures due to coagulation factors and immunity disturbance. Intralipids or IVIG helped them to have a child. Some patients with immune issues have done Humira, Wobenzyme N, LIT and got pregnant with IVF or naturally. Their FSH were great (many IVF clinics accepted them) and they failed IVF cycles. Anyway, reagarding high FSH I would like to give you one example: I decreased my FSH from maximum of 12 to 8!!! (for several months confirmed by a local lab) after changing my diet, yoga, vitamins and accupuncture with herbs. It cost me one year of though work but it is possible. Patients with high FSH do not need always donor egg. Many of them conceive on their own (despite high FSH). 1 more example: my girlfriend with high FSH got pregnant after I advised her after two miscarragies with blinded ovum (chromosomal abnormality) to try Clomid. After Clomid 2 rounds she got pregnant in her 44 and delivered a healty child. This small girl is now 1.5 years old doing great. Dear all, keep positive spirit, everything can happen. Keep going!!!

Hello everyone! I’ve read all your wonderful stories. I’m sure they had already inspired and will inspire or a lot of women, who have problems with fertility. I also want to share mine. Maybe it will help somebody with their choice. It’s a long story, but I will try to make it short not to bore you much. During my whole life there were no men to have kids with. I was not really lucky in choosing partners and there were no one whom I wanted to have kids from. So here I am, 58 years old, no kids no family. I thought that it’s too late for all these. So I came to terms with the situation and continue my lonely life. But in a couple of months I met Jorge – the love of my whole life, a man who loved me with his whole heart, a man, whom I gave all my love. All those failures in love were just wiped out and forgotten. Now I have my dear Jorge and nothing else really matters. He was 63, he also had no kids, his story was completely as mine. We’ve decided that it’s time for us to build a family, which we had never had! I have menopause so we were not able to conceive a baby by our own. But we didn’t back down and decided to try donation. We’ve founded BioTexCom, Ukrainian clinic, and went there. Thanks to our doctor we have 2 beautiful girls! They are 3 years old and we are the happiest family in the world!
